The appointment of a “digital director”, “chief digital officer” or “digital operating partner” is quickly becoming a must-have appointment within many private equity firms. As this trend has emerged at great pace I wanted to fully understand which firms have created the role and why, how the role varies between firms, and whether it truly delivers value.
I studied a sample of 80 firms, that are UK based or have a significant office in the UK, including large and small firms with mature and high growth portfolios, across sectors. From this initial sample I observed that between 20% and 25% of firms appear to have a specific digital leader and approached a number of the sample to undertake interviews and gather unique insight
